In Audi's, how does quattro work and what exactly does it do?

quattro, that's four in italian,it's the name that Audi has given to its 4WD transmission. In Audi's, how does quattro work and what exactly does it do?As per other answers, it is merely the designation Audi have given to their patented 4WD system. The system works by detecting wheel slip and reducing power to that wheel whilst increasing it to the others, thereby maintaining maximum grip. Unfortunately, Biff is incorrect, Audi was NOT the first to use four wheel drive. It was first used by a British manufacturer in the mid to late sixties, the car being the Jensen ff, which used a crudely refined version of the system used by Ferguson on tractors. Not many were built, and only a few remain, one of which is in my uncles garage in Swansea. In Audi's, how does quattro work and what exactly does it do?In the Quattro (first car to use the system) it would use a center differential to drive all four wheels at the same time. The modern version of Quattro drives 2 wheels primarily and engages the other 2 when slippage is detected. In Audi's, how does quattro work and what exactly does it do?quattro is the brand name for audis four wheel drive system
