Accuracy of the oil life monitor in a 1999 Buick Lesabre?
We recently inherited a 1999 Buick Lesabre. I noticed that it has a "change oil" light on the dash, which is NOT currently on, just the startup test. I didn't know that they had this 11 years ago... so i guess my question is how good is it? Could I follow that instead of the sticker? I'd feel more safe if it has a digital readout with oil life remaining instead of an idiot light, but would it be safe to change once the light comes on?Accuracy of the oil life monitor in a 1999 Buick Lesabre? The engineers that designed the engine and the oil life monitor, have a lot of data at their disposal. There is a considerable safety margin built into the oil life monitor. I agree a numerical read out would be better, but you are absolutely safe to go with the light.Accuracy of the oil life monitor in a 1999 Buick Lesabre?I had a 98 Malibu which was most likely identical to the one in your Buick. I think you'll find it will come on at about 5,000 miles in the usual mix of everyday driving, perhaps 8,000 in steady highway use, no traffic. If you don't know when the oil was last changed I wouldn't trust it. I'd change the oil now and begin to track mileage. If you do have a record of the last change I wouldn't be concerned until it went past 7,000 without coming on.
