It no longer accurately registers the amount of fuel in the tank. It may be a sensor or a fuse problem, but first, check your battery's cables. If they are loose, they can make your gauges go crazy. I know because THAT happened to me. Also, your alternator may be going bad b/c THAT also happened to me!
