It started choking like if there was water in the gas then got worst to where it was back firing. I put fuel treatment in. Now it just clunks and won't start. It blew out a big cloud of smoke. install a new fuel filter, then try again, you said backfire from the carburatoror or the tail pipe? oh and try cleaning the throttle body and the I.A.C. valve, just make sure you dont pull on the little umbrella type looking rod, if the rod is all the way out then its no good, use a toothbrush and about 3 cans throttle body cleaner. gd lk.What is wrong with my 1988 buick Regal?Have someone help you and Try to Drain Some Fuel "From the Bottom" of the Tank into a Large Jar and let it sit "Covered" for a while, if there is water you'll see it Separates from the Fuel! Change the Fuel Filter. Check Fuel Pressure at the Fuel Pump, Check Timing and Timing Belt/Chain, Lastly Check for Damage that may have happened to the Plugs because of the Excess Fuel %26amp; Backfire. NOTE; If it is water go to the Station where you got fuel just before this Happened and let them know that you might be taking them to Small Clams Court.
