It's the standard 350 with a 4-barrel carb, I don't really want to drop 1K on fuel injection. I'm not expecting miracle gains, but gas is getting hella expensive. How can i get the best gas mileage possible out of a 1972 buick skylark?A guy asked me the same question the other day, about a Durango with the 360 that his girlfriend just bought. I told him "try to drive mostly downhill, and make sure the wind is at your back".
But seriously, the Q-Jet, with it's small primaries, gives about as good of gas mileage as you're gonna get short of fuel injection, as long as you keep your foot out of it.
Tom L's advice is sound too, and applies to most any car. The one exception I would point out is to roll the windows down and turn off the AC if you have it, if you're going fairly slow. How can i get the best gas mileage possible out of a 1972 buick skylark?Set the choke as light as you can stand on the carb and lean out the mixture using the screws on the carb. That 350 should get decent mileage if you're not hogging the gas while driving it. Also as long as you're not pressing on the gas peddle too hard while driving the secondaries on the carb won't open up and the thing will get better mileage. How can i get the best gas mileage possible out of a 1972 buick skylark?Do any of the following or a combination of. It all depends on how much and far you want to go.
Make sure its in good running condition with a tune up.
1)New properly gaped "stock" spark pugs. Don't waist your money on fancy spark plugs.
2)New fuel filter.
3)Clean or new intake filter maybe a k%26amp;N stock replacement.
4)Lose the weight. Take out everything you don't need that day.
5)Properly inflate your tires and check them with a pressure gauge.
6)Do an oil change with an oil called ROYAL PURPLE. It is expensive but i extend my oil changes every 10-15 thousand miles (mostly Hwy miles) plus the premium oil added a few miles per gallon. Its great oil. My car has 1999 VW Turbo Passat has 200,000 miles on the engine and it still runs great. I attribute this to my proper maintenance and the ROYAL PURPLE oil.
7) Put a 2 barrel carb on it. You will prob lose power though. Or make sure yours isn't running to rich.
8) Accelerate slowly and do the speed limit. Driving habits have a huge impact on your MPG's. Coast to a stop and try to anticipate your stops. Use your brake the least possible.
Just a few suggestions that you can try. Some are free and some will cost you but they will increase your mileage. Its up to you how far you want to go.How can i get the best gas mileage possible out of a 1972 buick skylark?
Keep your tyres pumped up and rive with the windows closed. Don't overload it. Accelerate smoothly and (if it's a manual) use the appropriate gear. Around 50 miles an hour is the most economical speed to drive.
