What could cause a "86 Buick Century to just die while driving down the road?

My car just dies while driving down the road, then I can restart it and it starts right up, but when you put it in drive it dies again. After it sits awhile it will start up and drive fine until it decides to die again. What could cause a "86 Buick Century to just die while driving down the road?LOL! That car should have been buried in 1988. Sounds like you have a air intake or fuel problem. A Mechanic will have to run a diagnostic test to determine what part is failing. That car was never designed or built to last 23 years. It pretty amazing that it still around. What could cause a "86 Buick Century to just die while driving down the road?
Sounds like you've got some kind of blockage going on in your fuel system. Check the filter first, try adding a fuel dewaterer to your fuel tank, then start looking into other things that could block the flow of burnable fuel to the engine - fuel lines, injector blockages, engine computer failure, etc.

If your car has made it to 23 years of driving, then you seem to have a decent handle on how to take care of it. Wring every last penny's worth of use from it.What could cause a "86 Buick Century to just die while driving down the road?Engine needs to do four basic things. Breath in, take in fuel, spark the fuel, breath out. Its more complicated than that, but basically the things associated to each that could cause your problem:

Breath in - Air Intake Severely blocked

Take in Fuel - fuel filter needs to be changed, fuel pump going.

Spark the fuel - Cap/Rotor, plugs, wires

Breath out - Catalytic Converter is broken up/blocked.

My bets are on fuel filter or cat converter. Get under the car, bang the catalytic converter solidly with your hand. If you get a lot of rattle like you poured broken glass into it...bingo!What could cause a "86 Buick Century to just die while driving down the road?
it could be the coil getting hot and shutting down your car. you also could have a dirty gas filter. i would go with the filter first if i were you. it could be getting clogged. What could cause a "86 Buick Century to just die while driving down the road?could be a lot of thing. Do you have any warning lights on? Could very well be a blocked catalytic converter. Does it have a weird odor? What could cause a "86 Buick Century to just die while driving down the road?
bad coil or bad fuel id try a bottle of fuel treatment first and if that dont get it buy a new coil
