"Ready To Work?" By Pops I assume you mean "Back Fires through the Carb." Timing Belt/Chain needs Replacing, Distributor Rotor--Condenser %26amp; Points and Maybe Cap, Spark Plugs %26amp; Wires, Compression Test %26amp; Possible New Head Gasket, Cooling System, Transmission %26amp; Engine Flush, Braking System Check %26amp; Possible Repair, New or Good Used Tires, Check all Vacuum Lines for Cracks and/or Leaks, Steam Clean Engine (Top %26amp; Bottom) %26amp; Light Steam Radiator/Condenser area, New Air Cleaner %26amp; Fuel Filter, Etc."Good Luck!"What's wrong with a 1973 Buick Century that won't run but turns over and pops when gas is poured in the carb?Is there a spark? you can get one plug out and touch the engine with the plug, be careful,do not touch the metal yourself, just the plug. try to start, do you see a spark?
Anyway, I would start with carb' cleaning and then replace the spark plugs, oil and fuel, check the distributor cap.
Those car should be simple to maintain, good luck. What's wrong with a 1973 Buick Century that won't run but turns over and pops when gas is poured in the carb?
the timing could be out also if its poppingWhat's wrong with a 1973 Buick Century that won't run but turns over and pops when gas is poured in the carb? You say if Fires, but does not run when gas is poured into carb, and also that it "Pops". Sound like maybe the timing is off. But it could also be a vacuum leak, or a vacuum hose come off.
Also, if the choke is open when the engine is cold, it will be hard to start, and if it gets running, it will not stay running if the choke will not close.
It is hard to hard to diagnose without a lot of details.
Be very careful handling gas, if the engine backfires, it could set the gas on fire in the container. I know, I had that happen to me when I was a kid.
Pour a little gas into the carb, PUT the breather on loose, and then try starting it. The breather will keep flames from shooting out onto the engine, if it back fires.
